Founded in 1969, the Washington Monthly is an independent media organization based in Washington, D.C. Our mission: To preserve democracy and champion good governance through honest journalism and thoughtful commentary.
We’re not a subsidiary of a giant media company or a mouthpiece for ideologues. We’re independent, listened to by insiders and willing to take on sacred cows—liberal and conservative.
Our current network of journalists and expert contributors includes many of the nation’s leading authorities on issues like voting rights, marriage equality, education, civil service, political economy and economic opportunity. We publish expert, but accessible, analyses of the biggest legal, economic and political challenges currently facing the nation. We also offer deeply reported investigative pieces that hold power to account.
Instead of cynically tearing down institutions and programs, we offer innovative solutions: how to rebuild trust in civic institutions and create a government that works for the people; how to strengthen democracy, fight for truth and restore the primacy of science and common sense. We believe in the great American traditions of civic responsibility, equal opportunity and upward mobility.
And over the years, the Monthly has launched some of the biggest names in journalism, including James Fallows of The Atlantic, Michelle Cottle and Nicholas Confessore of The New York Times, and Pulitzer Prize-winners Taylor Branch, Jon Meacham, and Katherine Boo, among many others. We continue to be a valuable training ground for early-career journalists, many of whom have gone on to outlets like The Atlantic, Bloomberg News, Politico, and TIME.
